Tanzanian Memories
Penye nia ipo njia, meaning “Where there’s a will there’ s a way!”. I love fabric, and was blown away by the wonderful colours and designs of Kitenge fabric. I knew this was going to be the inspiration for a next art collection. I looked everywhere for small pieces of Kitenge fabric, and was ready to give up on the idea of using fabric in my art when we stumbled upon a tailor in Stone Town on the island of Zanzibar that was willing to sell some scraps, at a slightly inflated price! But, I got what I was looking for and could start dreaming, becoming creative!
I also used Shweshwe fabric in this collection. It is a printed dyed cotton fabric widely used in Southern Africa. It originally was dyed with indigo, but is now available in numerous colour combinations.
