Pantone Color of the Year, an inspiration to many

What is this? A color of the year?

A beautiful color chart created by Tharien

The Pantone Institute started this journey in 2000, at the turn of the century. And they have named a color every subsequent year! The color of the year has a significant impact on fashion and interior decorating designers, with collections often strongly following the said color.

How is the color chosen? Just a random process or a very deliberate decision? The choice is made by a committee of analysts with an in-depth insight of various industries to determine trends.

  • 2000: The first color was Cerulean, a beautiful blue that artists often will use to paint the sky. It is said that the color blue has a peaceful and calming effect on people, reducing their heart rate and blood pressure and making them less stressed.

  • 2001: Fuchsia Rose, a feminine color.

  • 2002: True Red, a strong red color associated with love, passion and power.

  • 2003: Aqua Sky, a soft blue-green, a gentle and serene color.

  • 2004: Tigerlily, a color with both red and yellow tones, inspired by the flower.

  • 2005: Blue Turquoise, inspired by the sea, a tone that is a little gentler than true Turquoise.

  • 2006: Sand Dollar, the color was considered to express concerns about the 2006 economy – is a warm shade that relaxes and soothes nerves. It is also reminiscent of the desert and soft sandy beaches.

  • 2007: Chili Pepper, a deep bold red, a confident and savvy color.

  • 2008: Blue Iris, a color with elements of both blue and purple.

  • 2009: Mimosa, a warm yellow. It was a color associated with optimism, hope and reassurance.

  • 2010: Turquoise, an unusual combination of blue and green, remained a favorite for many years to come.

  • 2011: Honeysuckle, a sherberty pink shade with memories of a summer holiday.

  • 2012: Tangerine Tango, a color reminding one of a brilliant sunset.

  • 2013: Emerald, a strong color associated with prosperity.

  • 2014: Radiant Orchid, a mix with fuchsia, purple and pink undertones.

  • 2015 Marsala, normally a robust red wine translated into a color that is said to enrich the mind and soul.

  • 2016: Rose Quartz and Serenity, the blending of two shades to create a new color. The description of Serenity is beautiful is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.

  • 2017: Greenery

  • 2018: Ultraviolet, a dramatic purple shade communicating originality, and future focused thinking.

  • 2019: Living Coral

  • 2020: Classic Blue represents the wonderful colors of the evening sky.

  • 2021: Illuminating and Ultimate Grey: this was the second time that a color combination became the color of the year; the yellow is a color showing vitality and the grey, a soft color resembling pebbles on a beach.

  • 2022: Very Peri is a beautiful periwinkle blue hue with a violet-red undertone, a color that has become a favorite of mine.

The 2023 color has not been announced yet, but there are lots of predictions already as described by Real Simple. The announcement of the 2023 color will be made on Thursday December 1st, 2022 at 7:00 PM EST. During this time, Pantone Color Institute leaders will discuss 2023's color, the selection process, and the influence that the color will have. You can stay informed on Pantone’s website.

Why am I interested in this? Color is expressive, color determines our moods, color is inspiration…color is what an artist needs! Wassily Kandinsky said “Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.”

I can’t wait!
